Absolutely #2. There are so many serious birth defects that are treatable. I have a husband with CP. When he was born they said he wouldn't live through the night. He obviously lived and had many surgeries. Now he is 43 and lives a perfectly normal life.

I'd prevent #2. The "serious birth defect" could be anything, including lots of things that can be treated and aren't fatal.
