Dilemma 4/19/09

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses
your understanding.

Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its
heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

--Khalil Gibran

You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?

1. You spend the rest of your life in chronic pain.
2. Your closest loved one spends the rest of his or her life in chronic pain.

It might depend on the level of pain. I have lived with this shoulder injury for years and it did hinder some of life (and taking those ibuprofen last summer nearly killed me). But going to PT helped enormously. So I might be ready for someone else to have chronic pain. If it was one of my kids, I'd say prevent #2. Otherwise, I'll prevent #1 b/c I'mjust that selfish.

Much as I would not want to be in chronic pain, listening to someone else whine about being in chronic pain might be harder to endure, plus having to dole out a constant stream of sympathy would be exhausting ;-) so... prevent #2.
