Dilemma 1/13/09

You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?

  1. You lose your sense of taste.
  2. You lose your sense of smell.

Hard one. I think I'd go with taste. I think taste is more about pleasure, for me. I use my sense of smell for all kinds of things: to tell if my kids are sick, if something's burning, for memory/association, etc. I think not having a sense of smell would be more detrimental to everyday life. Plus part of the joy of eating is the smell of the food ;)

Well, they kinda go together, but for this I'll assume they don't. I'd keep taste and lose smell. Pretty easy one as so many smells trigger headaches for me anyway.

I think I would miss taste more. Probably wouldn't eat much if I couldn't taste, which would be v. bad for my health in the long run. Also bad smells are my weakness (tar! gag) so loss of smell sense should make me more invincible, right? ;-) So, I prevent loss of sense of taste.

I think I would give up taste before I would give up smell. Smells trigger a lot of memories for me and there are just so many that I love (sleepy dog smell anyone?). And maybe if I couldn't taste food, I wouldn't be as interested in eating as much of it.
