Dilemma 1/23/09

You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?

1. You break the news to a good friend that he is being fired for poor job performance.
2. You break the news to a good friend that his partner is having an affair.

I've actually done #2.

I think I have to put some conditions on this one. If I agreed that he was doing a bad job, I would have no problems w/ #1. Then I might be able to enlighten him. I would also have to be certain about #2.

Given these two with just this info... hrm... I really wouldn't have a problem with either one. I would, however, rather have a friend lose a job than a marriage, assuming he was happy in both.

I'm going to prevent #2. Since I'm breaking the news, I assume I know these things are indeed true. While I wouldn't relish either, presumably #1 is not going to be a big shock to my good friend whereas #2 is.

my first instinct was #2. then i got to thinking about the rules.

am i preventing me braking the news, or the fact that it's happening?

if it's breaking the news, neither. otherwise, i stick with 2
