You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?
1. A paroled sex offender moves into your neighborhood.
2. A paroled murderer moves into your neighborhood.

I've always argued about this and no one I talk to seems to share my view. If one type of criminal has to register, why not all? Why do we give more weight to some crimes than others? Does that mean that a victim of one crime is not as damaged as another?
I really think it depends a lot on circumstance. Is the sex offender a boy who had sex with his 15 year old girlfriend when he was 17? Did the murderer kill her abusive husband? Not knowing anything further, I have to assume that the murderer is more dangerous. That's not to say I wouldn't be uneasy about having a sex offender around but I'm thinking of the violence level of the crime.
Of course, a parolee has served his time. The liberal in me says to give the dude a break.
ITA with Eden, as usual! I'm not on board with the U.S. hysteria over "sex offenses," which as E points out are often statutory rapes. I'll take the SO over the murderer, and both of 'em over another rotten driver, who is probably a bigger risk to my safety.
I'm always griping about this one when the NIMBYs appear on the news, so... I choose to prevent neither. Both have done their time. They have to live somewhere. If people don't like how the law works (you serve your time; you get out) then they need to work to change the law, not harass individuals.
neither
