You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?

For me, the key here is "alone." If the friend is smart enough to know how to get out of a rip current (swim sideways until you're out of it), that's easily solved. If not and my omnipotent powers allow me to put other people with the friend in scenario 1 so she has assistance, I'll prevent #2.
I'd prevent #1. Most of my friends are strong swimmers and would know what to do in scenario 2. #2 is only a bad situation if the friend panics. With #1, even if there are people around to pull the friend out of the water, the friend still might succumb to hypothermia.
