You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?
1. You are in a situation where you have to decide whether to save the life of a friend or the life of your friend's child.
2. You are in a situation where you have to decide whether to save the life of a friend or your own life.

ok, I'll bite. I'm going with prevent #2. #2 is no-win from the perspective of me, the magical decider: I'm either dead or plagued with guilt for the rest of my life. Boo. #1 sucks too, of course, but at least it's win-lose from the magical decider pov. Of course, I'm still going to suffer from guilt, but at the same time, I saved someone, and people are going to be grateful for that, which will assuage some of the guilt.
