Dilemma 4/12/09

Leaning against a wormy poppy-head,
So wan and worn that he could scarcely stand,
--For he was soon to die,--he softly said,
"Tell me you love me!"--holding hard her hand.

--Thomas Hardy

You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?

1. You tell a self-destructive lie to someone to prevent them from physically harming themselves.
2. You tell a self-destructive lie to someone to minimize their emotional pain.

I guess I would prevent scenario 2. It seems to me that the person in scenario 1 would also be suffering from emotional pain but they are actually at the point where they are going to act on it (so are in more immediate need than the person in scenario 2).

This is my third attempt to make this clear. Something is wrong w/ my brain today.

I would prevent #1 for entirely selfish reasons.

I don't think #1 is interesting to me whereas I can see myself using #2 as writing fodder.

So even though both can have similar outcomes and both are self-destructive (so I'm screwed either way), I pick to let the physical NOT happen simply b/c I want to see what would happen if the emotional occurred.

I must be in a mood today. I think I'm thinking too much of characters.
