Dilemma 4/3/09

When we’ve fought the battle bravely and are beaten to the wall,
’Tis the sneers of men, not conscience, that make cowards of us all;
And the while you are returning, oh! your brain is on the rack,
And your heart is in the shadow of the shame of going back.

--Henry Lawson

1. An unemployed man commits suicide.
2. A failed company's CEO commits suicide.

I'm thinking of the people left behind. Assuming all other things are the same, the CEO is more likely to have been able to afford to provide for those left behind. The regular dude might only have an insurance policy (which might be negated) so I'll prevent his death.

I suppose we're supposed to feel bad for the unemployed guy and not so much for the CEO, because s/he brought it on him/herself. But the failed company might have been a small business that was someone's life's work, not a billion-dollar greedy corporation, and the unemployed guy might have independently wealthy and therefore didn't have to work. Who knows? I'm really not sure how to choose here--their occupation or lack thereof doesn't really tell me which one is more worthy of being saved. But if I don't choose one, both die. Therefore, I am flipping a coin. Heads, prevent scenario 1. Tails, prevent scenario 2. Here goes:

Tails. Prevent scenario 2.
