Dilemma 4/15/09

We talk of taxes, and I call you friend;
Well, such you are,—but well enough we know
How thick about us root, how rankly grow
Those subtle weeds no man has need to tend

--Edna St. Vincent Millay

You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?

1. You find yourself in serious legal trouble over a mistake you made on your taxes.
2. An innocent friend is in serious legal trouble over taxes due to an untraceable mistake made by the government.

I'd prevent #2. That kind of situation is way harder to rectify because no one wants to take ownership of the problem. Plus the amount owing is generally some whacked out amount that the person could never pay in a million years. If I actually made a mistake, then fine, I'll pay the penalty and be done with it.
