I would prevent #1. If a human colony goes and is wiped out by a virus, maybe it's our fault for invading them. It would be worse to wipe out life, I think.
I'm with Eden; I'd prevent #1; it's like North America & smallpox. Boo. #2 is kind of delicious irony.
