#1 happened to me quite frequently. Come home from school, pet gone. All traces of pet gone. So I'll prevent #2.
I've had #1 happen (not in the way Eden means). It was terrible. Partly because of not knowing what happened to her and partly knowing that something bad had happened and I wasn't there to take care of her. So I'd prevent #1. #2 would be hard, but it's the kind of hard thing that we'll all have to go through at some point if we have pets (or family ;-)).
