Dilemma 2/16/09

You have the magical power to stop one and only one of the following two scenarios. Which would you prevent?

1. A fertility clinic loses its supply of frozen embryos.
2. A fertility clinic loses its supply of donated egg and sperm.

It's six of one, half dozen of the other for me. I think frozen embryos would probably affect more people in a deeper way so I'll prevent #2.

Oy. I think Eden's right that #1 would affect people more (emotionally). In scenario #2, it's "donated" eggs and sperm. So, there is no (or little) emotional attachment to these (at this point); they're just donations waiting to be chosen by potential parents. Frozen embryos, otoh, generally belong to one or more individuals (who probably have some emotional attachment to them, since they've gone to the trouble of creating them). So there's that. There's also the fact that the loss of a clinic's entire supply of frozen embryos is sure to bring out the right wing crazies accusing the clinic of killing unborn children. And as entertaining as that might be, I think it's probably best to avoid it due to potential backlash against fertility clinics. So... I will prevent #1.

Do you have to pick one or the other? What if my answer is prevent neither. Seriously.
